A 40-year-old Vancouver man died Sunday morning while snowmobiling on Burke Mountain.
The man, whose name has not been released by police, was snowmobiling with his sister until about 10 a.m. when he dropped her off at her car and said he was going to do one more run to the summit by himself, according to Coquitlam RCMP spokesperson Const. Dave Babineau.
When he didn't show up for work Monday morning, his sister reported
him missing. Coquitlam Search and Rescue (SAR) was called in but, while
volunteers assembled at the bottom of the mountain, the search effort
turned into a recovery after the man was found dead by another
snowmobiler.
"We were hoping to go up and find his snowmobile
broken down and waiting for us to arrive," said SAR member Dwight
Yochim. "The trail up there sometimes gets kind of rough and it looks
like he rolled the machine onto himself."
According to an RCMP release, he was found approximately 5 km from his truck, which was parked near the bottom of the mountain.
Yochim said the accident highlights how important it is to buddy up when snowmobiling.
"I
don't know if that would have changed the outcome but you should
always... go in pairs," he said. "Tell people when you're going to
return and let them know when you do."
The fatality is the second
related to snowmobiling on the mountain in a decade, the last being in
January 1996, when a 24-year-old man slammed into a metal gate.
