1996 – 2009

It is with extreme sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our Search & Rescue dog Barkley. He has lost a short battle with cancer as he recently passed the age of 13.

Barkley has served with Vancouver Fire/Rescue and the City of Vancouver for the past eleven (11) years as well as being a member of Vancouver Urban Search & Rescue (CAN TF-1). Barkley was one of the first search-K-9’s to arrive at the North Vancouver mudslide on January 19, 2005. He was also deployed to the Gulf Coast in August of 2005.

As a cadaver dog Barkley, has worked for City Police Departments in Vancouver, Delta, New Westminster, and Abbotsford. He has also done work for the Mounties in Coquitlam, Richmond, and North Vancouver, as well as The BC Coroner Service. Over the past ten years Barkley has been involved in thirty six (36) cadaver searches, has managed to locate the human remains of seventeen (17) subjects, and has been instrumental in the solving of four (4) homicides. He has worked on some very high profile cases such as The Lynn Duggan file and also worked with The Missing Woman’s Task Force.

Barkley has been present at countless public appearances over the past eleven (11) years at a variety of venues and has appeared on several TV shows including “Dogs with Jobs.” On behalf of myself, and Barkley, I would like to thank the management and staff of Vancouver Fire & Rescue for their ongoing support of this K-9 program, and their willingness to help serve the communities of the Lower Mainland.
