Mike Coyle
Sep 28, 1970 – Jul 25, 2026
Mike Coyle wore many hats during his 27 years with Coquitlam Search and Rescue. He was a Search Manager, Helicopter Rescue Technician (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z6kQDZ9pbc0), Software Developer (https://yourlo.ca/tion), (https://www.truenorthgeospatial.com/), CoqSAR website developer and manager. Mike worked on the BC Silver Alert program for vulnerable missing adults and was recipient of the Governor General of Canada Sovereign Medal of Volunteers.
But beyond the titles and accomplishments, Mike was a true team player. He was someone you could count on—whether it was during a challenging rescue, working through a technical problem, or simply sharing a laugh with teammates.
Mike enjoyed cycling, climbing, mountaineering, skiing, and especially spending time with his family.

“Athough we’ve lost a great teammate and leader, our thoughts are with his family. His partner lost a spouse and his son lost a father. On a personal note I look back at the accomplishments of our early years together on the team and those contributions continued to present days.”
Nick Zupan, President of Coquitlam Search and Rescue
“Mike was one the most recognizable and trusted voices in search and rescue in BC. As a search manager he was often the on be called on to explain a rescue to the public. Mike’s expertise and mentorship reached SAR teams across the country. He had a rare gift for teaching that made technical, high-stake skills feel approachable.”
Gord Thompson, President of Comox Valley Search and Rescue
“The loss of someone who has given so much of themselves in service to others is felt far beyond a single team. It is felt throughout the entire Search and Rescue and hiking community, among those who had the privilege of serving alongside him, learning from him, and calling him a friend.”
Lions Bay Search and Research
“His dedication and determination were instrumental in bringing the BC Silver Alert to life and advocating for the vulnerable missing adults and their families.”
Sam Noh, Co-founder BC Silver Alert
A Lasting Legacy
Mike generously devoted his time, knowledge, skills, and heart to Search & Rescue. He helped people find their way home, helped make his teammates safer, and helped build stronger SAR teams through his willingness to teach and mentor.

His absence will be deeply felt by his family, his Coquitlam Search & Rescue teammates, and the many people throughout the SAR and outdoor community who had the privilege of knowing him.
We thank everyone for your kind words, condolences, and support for Mike’s family and friends during this difficult time. Your thoughtfulness and compassion are deeply appreciated.
